10/08/2026 — Hazy morning in Kuching. Haze has worsened today, with Kuching’s API reaching 161 (Unhealthy). The situation is mainly associated with transboundary smoke from fires in Kalimantan, Indonesia. Serian recorded 178 and Samarahan 160, showing that the haze is affecting a wider area of southern Sarawak.
30/10/2026 — Why are Indonesia’s fires so hard to contain? In many affected areas, especially Sumatra and Kalimantan, fires can penetrate dry peat soil and smoulder underground, continuing after surface flames have been suppressed.
Since my last update in August, we are still experiencing haze in Kuching. Our neighbours, Singapore and Malaya, are sounding the alarm, but the Indonesian government seems to be unable to find a solution. Instead, they are pointing fingers back at companies that are owned and operated by Singapore and Malaysia.
How far is the truth about these companies being the culprits? We do not know. We do know this: Indonesians, Malaysians and Singaporeans are suffocating.
