I bought TP-Link TP8990 last week. What an awesome modem! It’s not really cheap by my income standard but was the cheapest comparable to what other high-end brand modem offer on an almost similar specs.
I overlooked a small details of Streamyx setting the first time I set this beast up. Here’s a step-by-step how-to to make your setting up a more exciting experience.
Step One
Before you can edit your new modem; TP-Link TP8980 setting, you need to first connect to it. Switch on your new modem and wait until you see your default Wi-Fi signal to appear. Connect to the default Wi-Fi network (shown below) with the password that can be found on your modem (look for the white sticker).
As usual I will access the modem with my Safari Browser. You can access the modem virtually with any desktop or mobile devices. Point your browser to;
- User ID: admin
- Password: Admin
You can use the software that came with the modem but I prefer not to install bloatware on my computer.
Step two
This “Quick Setup” is not so quick setup. Not as simple as the one on Innacomm. I wish it were fewer steps to go though. Click “Quick Setup” to proceed.
Step Three
This is where it gets tricky. The VPI & VCI value by factory default is 8/35. DO NOT use the default value, you will never connect to Streamyx with the default value.
Change it to;
- VPI: 0
- VCI: 35
Step Four
Select PPPoE for most of us. If you encounter problem not able to connect to the Internet with PPPoE, please change it back to PPPoA.
Step Five
Enter your Streamyx credentials so your modem knows how to connect to the ISP. If you have forgotten your password, you can call TM at 100 to reset your password. (Dial 100, select report line fault, key in your house phone number and speak to the human being)
- Username: username@streamyx
- Password: Your Streamyx password
- Confirm Password: Retype the Streamyx password.
Personally I think the double confirm on the password is a redundant step but it could be useful for some people; making sure you have entered a correct password could save some time in troubleshooting.
Step Six
Give your wireless network a name. TP-Link TP8980 is a dual band wireless; 2.4GHz and 5GHz signal. Set your wireless network name (SSID) to both of these signal. You might want to set a signal name that you can recognize which is which 2.4 and 5GHz signal.
- Wireless Network Name: Any name you desire
- Region: Malaysia
- Channel: Auto
- Mode: 11an mixed (5GHz), 11bgn mixed (2.4GHz)
- Security: WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK
- Password: Give a strong 13 characters password (pair with capital letters, small letters, numbers and special symbols)
Last Step
Review your setting and hit save. Slightly more steps to complete TP-Link TP-8980 modem to connect to Streamyx but luckily it is quite straightforward.
From now on, your modem will be up and running with two wireless networks. If your devices see both networks, you can use either one of these networks. Otherwise, your devices are only supporting 2.4GHz wireless networks.

Thanks so much, Yui, Thisbeast for the Info. But can I change the name of the 2.4Ghz Channel ? Like TP-LINK_2.4Ghz_?????? to say… Alfred 2.4Ghz LAN.
Go step step 6 – you can change any name you want. Says – 1MDB 🙂 kidding
Thanks Thisbeast, Very Funny, but be careful though, you might never know whether they’re watching or not.
Anyway, I think I forgot to ask something about Step 1, during the attempt to login to the 192.168.1.1,
1. Do I need to plug a direct cable from the PC to Modem ?
2. Do I need to setup a connection at my PC before attempting login to the modem ?
3. If after I’ve managed to changed the 2.4Ghz’s name, will that affect the Internet & WiFi connections to my PC & my big bro’s Laptop ?
Hi,
1. Do I need to plug a direct cable from the PC to Modem ?
Since you already connected to the modem at this point, you don’t need cable.
2. Do I need to setup a connection at my PC before attempting login to the modem ?
I don’t understand what you need to setup. There’s nothing to setup so long your laptop or desktop PC can connect to the modem via cable or wireless – everything are automatic. The address 192.168.1.1 is a default for most modem.
3. If after I’ve managed to changed the 2.4Ghz’s name, will that affect the Internet & WiFi connections to my PC & my big bro’s Laptop ?
For wireless devices you need to reconnect, for wired devices (via cable) no changes needed.
Hi Thisbeast, the reasons why I ask Q 1 & 2 is because I want to know what went wrong when I try to setup this modem myself in the first place. As for Q 3, thank you so much for info & guidance but I think I better don’t do anything, don’t want to create more trouble to my family.
Again, thanks so much for your patience, info & guidance.
I don’t think you are making any mistake, instead I think you’re more of afraid making mistake.
Even now that your modem was properly configured, you still can log in and take a snapshot of everything; learn each configuration setting.
Hi Thisbeast, sorry for not writing for some time now. My Big Bro says his laptop doesn’t detect this Modem’s 5Ghz Band, any ideas what went wrong ?
1. Likely your laptop does not have the hardware capable. My MacBook is a late 2008 model and I have no problem with 5Ghz band.
2. If hardware is not the issue, your software is. If you still using old software/firmware that does not update to the latest to take advantage of the new capabilities — that’s too bad.
You need to look for similar fix online for your issue. I don’t use Windows, and Mac update software every year, I don’t have the issue at all.
Thanks Thisbeast, I’ll try to relay the message to my Big Bro & Thank you so much for your guidance.
Bought this Modem around 2 days ago but when I try to set it up, connect to this 2.4 Ghz Wireless thing, guess what ? There’s no Internet Connection.
Run that Network Diagnostic Tool or somethin’ & it said something like my DNS thing is not responding or doesn’t exist, OK, I completely baffled.
Did I missed something ? Or do I need to connect this Modem directly to my PC ?
Please, HELP !!!
I like to add something else too.
After I’ve connect the “power” & the Internet Plug to the Modem, Do I need to configure my PC’s TCP / IP thing before it can make the “connection” in order for the modem to be configure ?
Hi,
Make sure you have follow the above step by step instruction; especially step three.
VPI: 0
VCI: 35
Well, That’s the problem. Half way in step 1, even if I managed to connect to the 2.4Ghz, I was unable to access the http://192.168.1.1.
For Example:
My PC ————My Net———X———-Internet
So I check, check & check again, somehow, after I’ve “setup” everything – the power for the modem, the Internet line & access the 2.4Ghz Wireless, I found out that there’s some sort of a message which I can’t remember where, it said something about my DNS isn’t responding or doesn’t exist.
So I assumed I must have to configure this IP thing on my PC so it can communicate with the modem or something in order to access the modem’s configurator to make that quick setup process.
Any greater ideas ?
Use the provided cable to connect to your PC, then go to 192.168.1.1
Unfortunately, the cable provided was not long enough as the distance between my PC & where my modem usually sits is quite far away.
Again, sorry Thisbeast, I can’t even access the 192.168.1.1 even if I managed to connect to the modem using 2.4Ghz. I did a little research on it & based on this modem’s user guide (Online), it goes something like this:
“TD-W8980 N600 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit ADSL2+ Modem Router User Guide 10
Chapter 3. Quick Installation Guide 3.1
Configuring the PC
After you directly connect your PC to the modem router TD-W8980 or connect your adapter to a
Hub/Switch which has connected to the modem router, you need to configure your PC’s IP
address”.
Hi, just bring your PC to the modem and set it up. It’s only for one time setup.
You need to setup your modem and make sure it connected to the internet before you do anything else.
Thanks Thisbeast. My Old Man (Dad) somehow remembered & call the TM Contractors who previously help us setup our old modem & Internet connection to do all the setting up for this Modem Router.
But another problem arise, because there were some changes to the WiFi settings, my Big Bro was unable to connect to this Modem wirelessly even though the WiFi name remains unchanged. So I did some research into it & if my assumption is correct, I think he needs to remove the “old” WiFi Name & try to connect to the “New” one, right ?
Yes, you can always delete and reconnect. Usually fix the problem
Hi Thisbeast, right now my PC is connected this Modem Router through the TP-LINKS Powerline Adapters & it’s great !
But now I’m a little curious though, when I open the “Network and Sharing Center” I noticed that my PC is connected to the modem through the 2.4Ghz channel, is this by default ? Can it be switch to the 5Ghz ?
Thanks.
no, you can’t, but on the other hand – you dont even need it. 5Ghz WiFi band is available as alternative to polluted 2.4 Ghz, when using wired adapters – there is no pollution from others. Therefore alternative is not needed.
Hi! Your Powerline adapter should be connect direct from wall socket via network cable to your PC, is it not so?
If that was the case you can’t use either 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz. it’s build for wireless not for wired.
If I don’t want to use WIFI for the time being, do I just need to switch off the WIFI button at the back of the modem ?
Does anyone have any issue with this modem router after months or years of use ?
If I don’t want to use WIFI for the time being, do I just need to switch off the WIFI button at the back of the modem ? — Yes
Does anyone have any issue with this modem router after months or years of use ? — I use mine since 2013 and still using it today to write this message.
Hi Beast, Thank you so much for replying. Thanks again for the Info & guidance. Hope you won’t mind if I ask you of this:
The TP-LINK AV500 Powerline Adapter with AC Pass Through Starter Kit, Model No.TL-PA4010PKIT, do you know how long is the Ethernet Cable provided in this product ?
Thanks.
If I’m to use the Powerline Adapter instead of the WIFI, ‘Direct Line’ instead of Wireless, which Band will I’ll be using automatically, the 2.4Ghz or the 5Ghz Band ?
Can this Modem use both Direct Connection & WIFI at the same time ? For example, I use the Powerline Adapter while my big brother use the WIFI.
If i use Powerline Adapters as Direct Ethernet connection, will my PC still Auto-Connect to the Internet ?
Everything will be automatic, your internet will always-on.
Your PC and everything else will always connected to the Internet — that’s the reason why we are having internet.
Oops. Sorry, Thisbeast, as I’m not very knowledgeable in Computer Stuff.
Do you remember the Powerline Adapters I mentioned earlier ? Say… if I’ve somehow successfully paired them & I need to go sleep, I switch them off for the night & back on the next morning, will they stayed ‘paired’ ?
You should look at the manuals. Again, anything to do with modem or internet connection devices — you should be able set once and forget. It will just work every time you switch on and off.
Your question is way out of the topic of this blog post 🙂
So Yui, basically what you’re trying to say is, for example, if the wall socket in my living room has say… 1 Ground, 1 Neutral & 1 Live wire type, my computer room has 1 Neutral & 1 Live wire type, the Powerline Adapter won’t work ? But if the wires in my computer room’s wall socket matches the one at the living, the device will work, correct ?
Your wall socket has 1 zero + 1 phase holes, and 1 upper hole which is safety grounding.
I was trying to explain about cables that come to your home, it can be 2 or 4 , in case its 2 (1 phase + 1 zero)
everything will work, in case its 4 – then your wall outlets may have different phases and PLC will not work between them.
Home cable input must be fused, you can check if you have just 2 or 4 fuses here, and while shutting fuses off
you can check what parts of your home depend on what fuse.
The one that will turn everything off – zero
ones which will partially power down – phases
sometimes its 1+1 for all wall outtlets with 3+1 input, 380 volt (3+1) is used for cooking, heating and air conditioners only then.
But if the wires in my computer room’s wall socket matches the one at the living, the device will work, correct ?
Yes
I went to take a look at the Electric meter, at the front side of my home & from what i see, 2 white wires, 1 heads to a small greyish box with a larger black wire going into the house while the other white wire heads to a somewhat large black box with a red wire going into the house. S0… Is this a 2 wire 1 phase thing ?
then PLC will work in your entire home
Thanks Yui.
Oh, can the PLC do the auto-connect to / auto-detect Internet line ?
Do I need to press the “pair” button every time I switch it on ?
Do you know the size of it’s “Jacks” / “Sockets” ? Is it RJ11 or RJ45 ?
Sorry Yui, this question is going sound so absolutely stupid – this PLC, is it like a one long Ethernet cable ?
exact answer should be “depend on the model”
You should be able to set it up once and let them work without hassle, or they are already paired (they are sold in pack of x2)
Its RJ45 , one PLC you connect with your router with ethernet cable
other PLC you connect with PC or Wireless AP
Yes, its like a long Ethernet cable (simple answer), if you cant use ethernet cable or wireless.
But better answer should be “its not like ethernet cable” , because its using ODFM modulation with encryption via power wires, its more like WiFi using power wires 😀
Hmm… Have you use it before ?
If you have, is it better than actual WIFI ?
depends on use-case, in case you cant cover your home with wifi due to some reason (big home, thick walls) and cant use ethernet cable – PLC is a way to go.
There are even some ISP, that provide “last mile service” via PLC technology (i dont know if any such exists in KL or M-sia)
I have to agree with thick walls thing. Sometimes the WIFI is so good if not great but few weeks / months ago, it was so @#$*%, it makes you fell like you want to wreck TM to ground.
Which is why I’ve been seeking alternatives to WIFI all this while & I think this PLC should do the job, If after I buy this PLC, all i have to do is just plug 1 at the living room near my modem, 1 at my computer room, plug the RJ45s, wait for the Internet detection & WALLA ! I can surf the Internet, no setting ups to do, correct ?
Thanks. Your vpi/vci sharing saved my day!
Glad It helps 🙂
On step 5, Do I really have to enter those credentials provided by streamyx ?
Because nowadays, I can’t even login to Streamyx Official Website anymore no matter how I try using my “Credentials” (since 2010), even my current Zyxel P-600 series modem’s configuratior is inaccessible,
Hi Mr. Chang,
I’m not quite understand your situation. Have you been paying for your internet since 2010 and was unable to use your Streamyx ID and password?
1) You need Streamyx password and ID to configure your modem. – call TM at 100 to reset your password. Have your phone bill ready because they need your address and account number — exactly as your phone bill.
2) if you can not access your Zyxel P-600, reset your modem and use the default ID & password to access (default password/ID normal are admin/admin)
Thank you
Thank you so much for your reply.
1. Yes, I’ve been paying my for Internet Service since 2010 & yes, I can’t access TM Streamyx Official Website using my Streamyx ID & Password. (For Example: Alibaba2213@Streamyx, Aladdin&da40Thieves)
2. If I’m not mistaken & If I remember correctly, I’ve only access my modems’ configurator & TM Streamyx Official Website once a long time ago and I dare not change anything for fear that I might not get my Internet connection back.
Now it’s 2015, when i tried to access my modem’s configurator to see Streamyx’s VPI & VCI value, no luck, try accessing TM Streamyx’s website, kept giving me “Invalid Email / Password”.
3. As for calling TM at 100, I don’t know, maybe I’ll discuss it with my family on what course of actions to take to resolve this baffling issue.
4. If I manage to reset the modem & access it’s settings, what should I do ? As I don’t remember if I’ve ever reset it before.
5. If i didn’t disturb my streamyx’s username & password, will it still be there if I change to a different modem ? Can i still use them if they’re still there ? I mean, since I can’t access the current one I’m using.
Thanks.
2. Your modem user id and password is not the same as Streamyx account.
4. if you do not have the Streamyx account and password, I strongly suggest you not to do anything. Once you reset the modem, all existing/entered information will be wipe clean.
5. Your existing modem configuration will stay. even if you power off the device. If you change to a new modem in the future with a new password, then no, your current modem need to be reconfigure to reflect the new password.
1. TM customer service website was revamp this year. The system does not work 100%. I have two Streamyx account. One of the Streamyx account and password can not be use for the customer service website. I went to TM and complain about this issue, they ask me to call 100. Just so you know, you may have a correct Streamyx account and password but TM website maybe login you out because the site has an issue.
So… What you mean is, my Streamyx ID and Password since 2010 is actually undisturbed ? All I have do if after I bought this TP-LINK Modem Router, is just use my usual ‘undisturbed’ Streamyx ID & Password during the Step 5 process (For Example: Alibaba2213@Streamyx, Aladdin&da40Thieves), the rest is self-explained, correct ?
Hi – exactly.
Once you get the new modem, follow my instructions above and use your old Streamyx user ID and password.
Good luck
Based on what you said, it means that I didn’t mistyped my Streamyx ID & Password, it’s Streamyx’s “New” Website is causing the problem. I wondered why they never inform or notify their customers about it ?
Anyway, Thank you so much for your help & guidance, if I manage to get that Modem Router, I hope you won’t mind if I ask for your guidance again should I ran into any baffling issue during the installation.
Oh, have you heard of this product ? TP-LINK TL-PA4010KIT AV500 Powerline Adapter with AC Pass Through Starter Kit.
Sometime we need communities to let us know. I happen spend more time with all these so I knew a little bit more – I share.
You can’t expect a cooperate company to admit to their fault hahaha
As for the home plug, yes, I use one at home. From difference brand.
Depend what you want to do – it’s very handy wifi/ internet extender.
During the installation process, do I have to use the CD that came with the Modem Router as well ?
not necessary, all configuration is doable via browser
“The PLC (TP-LINK TL-PA4010KIT AV500 Powerline Adapter with AC Pass Through Starter Kit) devices might not communicate with each other if they
are in different phrases of a four-wire three-phase circuit” – Troubleshooting Section, Quick Installation Guide.
This is one thing that I really don’t understand, what does it mean by “…a four-wire three-phase circuit…” ?
Any great ideas ?
Oh, I forgot to ask. Does this Modem Router has this Auto-Connect to the Internet features ?
And the size of the plug from the external splinter to the Modem’s ADSL Socket, is it RJ11 or something ? As far as I know, RJ45 is somewhat wider than RJ11 & it’s used for connecting modem to the modem / router, right ?
ADSL/Phone is RJ11 (4 wires) (analog)
RJ45 is ethernet (8 wires) 100-1000 Mbit
they are not compatibleof course.
difference between “ADSL router” and “normal” router is WAN port, for “normal” its Ethernet, for ADSL its phone jack
In case you have a super featured ethernet router you can use adsl-router as modem in bridge mode, and let the super router to its job, while adsl-router will just convert adsl media to ethernet media.
Thats what I use at home, an old D-Link 1 port router works as bridge and mini PC (Baytrail 4 core CPU, 8 Gb RAM, 4 TB storage) works as router and server for my home network
device needs do be on same cable (2 wires)
low voltage electricity (110-127-220-240-380 volt) is using
ONE zero(null) wire, which serves as grounding to phases,
THREE phase wires
optionally real grounding wire – which is NOT used for other purposes but safety.
PLC will work only if connected with same PHASE and ZERO wire, in case your home has entry of 4 wires, different rooms may use different phase wire, PLC will not work between them
If you have 2 wires – all rooms will use same phase wire, PLC will work fine.
and btw i havent seen any device without autoconnect feature , 99.9% shall have it 😀
tq for ur very helpful advice, by resetting vpi:0, now i manage to connect internet.tq very much
Your welcome Aaron 🙂
Hi Jong
Oh boy! How did I miss this comment for two years? Hahaha sorry.
Thanks for the tip! The VPI setting was causing me problems.
Hi, I’m glad it helps you 🙂
not bad, how much was its price exactly?
m? you use such AC plugs in M-sia?
I seen same in Cyprus
I bought it for RM275 (was RM310)
The first one (big head), it’s standard in Malaysia. The second one (small head) we don’t use it here.
http://www.quantumbalancing.com/worldelectricity/electricityif.htm
Russia is type C and F , sometimes we’re using adaptors F->C
same was in Greece
