I load Synology with a few movies and give it a spin. It was perfect, although my intention for the NAS is only for photos and files — this would make a very good pass time movie streaming server.
I watch Netflix and YouTube with my Google Chromecast. I like the simplicity and the fact that movie contents will continue to play even though your phone was no longer connected to the same network. With Plex app on your iOS or Android, it works exactly the same. 👍👍👍
I like the interface. Dark mode y’all! The interface color looks really good on iPhone X oled screen.
The information on the screen changes as you glance through your movie catalogs. It gives you review rating from Rotten Tomatoes. It’s impressive enough for me – everything display on the screen without delay.
Playback setting was really impressive too. You get to choose the type of qualities you desire. I was watching the movie from a bedroom while my Synology was in the living room with door close – the experience was the same as I stream from Netflix except this one direct from my NAS directly with higher picture quality.
My kids were enjoying the movie, Annie that I test stream from the NAS. We end up seating on the floor and watching the movie.
Whatever my view on the Synology box, I have a good experience because it works the way it should be after setting it up. The NAS unit can be very technical if you’re not familiar with the concept. It took me about 6 – 8 hours (more or less) to the basic understanding of the system itself.
I’m surprised that this little box can be so powerful. It’s expensive, but I think I’m good because I get to explore quite a bit and learn dozen of stuff.
Once I mastered it, I will get the bigger Synology in the future.
