Mobile-only like Benjamin Robbins?

I came across an interesting article today “This man did all his work from a smartphone for one year — here’s what he learned”. Link posted by @pualmah Writer for ZDNetAsia.

The idea is not new, in fact I am very much interested to go full time with iPad after listening to Cultofmac Editor, Leander Kahney telling listeners of CultCast; He ditches his PC all together.

My daughter will gets her first tablet

I am absolutely confidence that the new generation does not buy their first PC but instead a smartphone or a tablet. I believe my daughter would get her first tablet when she is eight or maybe 12.

If I start teaching my daughter about tablet in the early age, she will definitely follow the habit of mobile-only computing in the future. She will be using tablet full time when she grows up, at least until another revolutionary products come into disruption.

How soon can I use my iPad full time?

I am not sure about the duration but until Microsoft hustle up Office for iOS and Android, that probably be still my main bottleneck.

I still have to rely on Microsoft Office simply because 99.9% people in my business circle use Microsoft Office. I cannot switch to open source or Apple’s product simply because it just not compatible in many functions and feature in Office.

  1. there are tablet-laptop transformers, bigger touchscreen, a dockable keyboard, can be nice thing for those who use mostly mobile but want some kind of laptop too. But definitely one thing is clear, less people use desktop PC’s
And i think tablets killed ‘netbook’ sector of market, i have one but dont really use it 🙂

    • I never bought a netbook, totally underpowered with Windows OS. I would use an iPad with Apple keyboard. I can’t wait to get iPad Mini. I am also on the lookout for awesome Android device and be done with it. looking for upgrade for the next few years.

      • I got one before buying a tablet, packard bell dot-s, coming with MeeGo, but that pre-installed OS was awful and even no proper video driver (!)
I ve installed Ubuntu 12.04 (LTS) so it wasnt really that bad. Anyway, battery life is short (3h when not idle), screen resolution is too small (1024×600) and form-factor doesnt let me use it in a car or so.. Its worse than laptop and its less mobile than a tablet. The only 2 good thngs – its small and it can use normal apps, but its still needs some kind of ‘workplace’ while tablet can use anywhere.

  2. I use my laptop less and less frequently these days, reserving it primarily for graphics work that an iPad can’t do. Most of the time, though, I’m on my iPhone or iPad during the day. I still use my desktop a great deal of the time, but if I HAD to, other than graphics, I could get along pretty well with mobile-only.

    • I think we are heading to mobile-only computing sooner than we thought. I still use my MacBook on a daily basis. Like you, I use it for graphics and Microsoft Office.

Jumping full time on mobile-only has a lot obstacle we need to overcome but I think give it a year or two most of the task we comfortable on the desktop will be converted to mobile platform as the world adapting mobile platform.
