If you have bought Office for Mac 2010 & 2011 last year during the promotional period, you get to choose for free upgrades. The similar offer for Windows was back in January.
Offer Eligibility Period
[quote]The Office Pre-Launch Offer has two distinct periods:
- Eligibility Period – from October 19, 2012 to April 30, 2013: You must purchase, install, and activate your Office 2010 or Office for Mac 2011 product. You may sign up at Office.com/offer to be notified by email when the products are ready for download.
- Redemption Period – from January 29, 2013 to May 31, 2013: If you signed up, you will receive an email from Microsoft when the new Office is ready for download. You must redeem the offer at Office.com/offer within the redemption period.

Have your 25-character product key ready then please go to this page to claim your upgrade before May 31, 2013. Read the details and terms here – I recommend you go through it since the Office365 license works a little bit different from the local install version.
My Thoughts – Unfair
- I bought Office Mac Home and Student 2011 – (1 User-3 Installs), my upgrade is forced to only OPTION A “Office 365 Home Premium One (1) year non-commercial subscription”
- Funny thing is Office Home and Student 2010 gets to upgrade to OPTION B “Office Home & Student 2013
One (1) non-commercial PC license” I thought this is unfair. - “OPTION A” is free for one year. If I choose not to pay for the subscription after one year, I would lose the ability to edit documents.
- The whole upgrade business for customer who bought Office Mac Home and Student 2011 – (1 User-3 Installs) is in fact a downgrade or a forced new version and a forced subscription indirectly.
- If you’re not happy with this offer you can always stay with Office Mac Home and Student 2011 – (1 User-3 Installs).

It is still Office 2011 for Mac in the Office 365.
There’s no different at all? ROFL that’s mean if I took the upgrade I basically switch from 3 install for eternity to a one year subscription service. Ah! What a joke.
You know what, I should try the free 30 days. I will see more clearly.
Thanks for the head up
there’s license different. you get 5 installations and 1 year subscription service.
Also, if Microsoft release new Office for Mac version, you will get it for free in your Office 365 subscription period.
Come to think of it, 365 is not for me. The 5 installations is not really a big deal for me. Until I change my perception that Microsoft is charging too much, I think i will stick to the 3 install for one price.
