The very first time I heard of Jay Chow was; say 5 or 6 years ago. The first song that makes my brain jump was “Ninja” yes, what kind of song was that? It’s a no fool song and this guy with tongue-twister-sing-in-murmur is really talented. With this current new album more to the World music categories , show case quite a lot of Chinese cultures while maintaining the hip hop flavor.
My personal favorite “(聽媽媽的話 Ting Ma Ma De Hua)/ Listen to Mama’s Words”, ” (退後 Tui Hou)/ Stepping Back”, and ” (白色風車 Bai Se Feng Che)/ White Windmills” the rest of the song was just cool. Also featuring song from the latest movie The Curse Of The Golden Flower, “(菊花台 Ju Hua Tai)/Chrysanthemum Flower Bed” Stars Chow Yun Fatt, Gong Li and Jay Chow.
I saw the music video clips from satellites (running 1 whole week before the album was release on September 2006, on Taiwan TV channel) showing “(本草綱目Beng Chao Gang Mu)/ A Herbalist’s Manual (Compendium of Materia Medica)” Chinese ghost dancing in hip hop style was totally smashing! Jay Chow goes all the way directing his own music video clips was a really a break through for himself. It’s not all the time seeing Taiwanese music celebrities taking own initiative learning every thing to cut down cost of productions. “(夜的第七章 Ye De Di Qi Zhang) /Twilight’s Chapter Seven” was shoot in London, kinda cool!
So if you are a hipsters or a wannabe or you are looking for baseline to punch your car stereo-with-oversize-subwoofer to feel cool, this is your kinda CD to own! My advice is… If you are a Chinese you must own this CD in your car wherever you go.
